I am a big RUSH fan and like everything about the band - the musicianship, the songs and lyrics, the live performances and the fact that they've achieved incredible success entirely on their own terms.
I spent countless hours in my teens and early twenties trying my best to learn these songs note for note.
I recently dusted off my basses and revisited some of my favorites.
In addition to my Rush covers, I play along with other songs that I think are interesting, specifically from a bass player's perspective.

Spooky Bass Cover
Happy Posthumous Birthday to Paul Goddard who was born on this date in 1945 and who passed away in April of 2014. Paul was well known for playing Rickenbacker basses, but I won't hold that against him.
"Spooky" by Atlanta Rhythm Section off of their "Underdog" album which came out in 1979 and featured Paul Goddard on bass. The song is actually a remake. The first version was an instrumental. The second was recorded by the band "Classics IV" (which had a member or two from ARS in the band). And the third was by "Atlanta Rhythm Section".
This one is a few years old. I'm playing the Spector NS2A through a SansAmp Para-Driver. This was the first Spector bass that I got and the one that started ...

Happy Father's Day! I wasn't going to upload anything this week, but here we are. This was one of the videos that I pre-uploaded on to RUclips as a precaution before switching computers (in case something went wrong with the migration). Lynn and I went to see John Fogerty at Bethel Woods on Friday and Almost Queen last night. Thankfully, I have this coming week off from work. "Round and Round" ...

"White Knuckles" by Elvis Costello and The Attractions off of the 'Trust' album which came out in 1981 and featured, the one and only, Bruce Thomas on bass. Bruce will be the first to tell you that many of his bass-lines were inspired by an assortment of Motown and R&B bass-lines. Some generally and some specifically. He said that this was one of his bass parts that is all-him... He said - "Her...

"I Just Wanna Stop" by Gino Vannelli off of his 'Brother to Brother' album which came out in 1978 and, according to Wikipedia, featured Leon Gaer on "synthesized electric bass". It doesn't sound like synth-bass to me, but I understand that Gino Vannelli had great production values on his albums. The Rush song that Harry suggested to me was "Bacchus Plateau", not "No One At The Bridge". I'm play...

Happy Belated Birthday Marvine!!! I don't know how, but I missed Marvine's birthday this year and I feel terrible about it. It was on April 22nd. So sorry Marvine, I hope you had a great day. Tomorrow is the last night of a month long run of shows for us. We had Barry Manilow back on April 20th. Then, we had our friend, Adam Cyran's Rush tribute band AF2K (A Farewell to Kings) on April 26th. Th...

Struggling to decide what to upload this week and I stumbled across this one. It’s another do-over. The original version was the 20th video I uploaded on my channel and the very first non-Rush cover. I was looking at my uploads in chronological order and was a bit surprised (though not shocked) at what I saw. I uploaded my first video on January 24th, 2010 and uploaded my 20th on February 15th,...
Pretty Words Bass Cover

"Pretty Words" by Elvis Costello and The Attractions off of their "Trust" album which came out in 1981 and features, the one and only, Bruce Thomas on bass. Another super-cool bass-line by Bruce! I've got another half-dozen covers featuring Bruce Thomas' bass-lines off to the side and he was gracious enough to write a few words for each of them. I did not get one specifically for this song, but...

Wishing my dear old friend, Helen Anastasia Anderson, a very Happy Birthday! I'm actually a couple of days early, but who wants to upload on a Sunday? This is a do-over. I uploaded my original cover back on January 30, 2011, right around the time that Helen and I became acquainted. "Cup of Wonder" by Jethro Tull off of the "Songs from the Wood" album which came out in 1977 and featured the late...

I wish a reluctant Happy Birthday to Roger Hodgson who was born on this date in 1950. Why my reluctance? I can count on one hand the number of videos I've had permanently blocked, taken down, received copyright strikes for... and I never took it personally, until this one. This is a really old video and it kept getting blocked. I'd no sooner file a counter-dispute and win the appeal when the vi...

"Watching the Wheels" was the final single released off the album (in the US) on this date in 1981, just a little over three months after he was killed, on December 8th, 1980. "Watching the Wheels" by John Lennon off of his "Double Fantasy" album which came out in November of 1980 and featured Tony Levin on bass. I'm playing the "retro version" Double-Bit bass that was built for me by Joe Kruse...
Nice job man!
Thank you!
Super talentoso.
Nice Guilds
Thanks
Great job, Troy! Nice sound and playing.
Thank you kindly!
My old teacher used this as an exercise for me to learn by both ear and watching others without notation or tab. Absolutely rocks 🤘🤘
He used this particular video? Thanks.
love it
Great to hear!
Buenas tardes. Excelente gracias profesor 👍
Currently learning this song by ear as best I can. This song has one of the most creative bass lines I’ve ever heard! Lots of variation, 16th-note fills, and even accidentals with the D# at the end of each verse. Rush made a common key like G-major into something spectacular!
Nice! Standard tuning?
Thanks! Yes, concert pitch (as I remember)
This made me smile: "Paul was well known for playing Rickenbacker basses." Ha. Thanks - well performed.
Wow. Very well done. Respect. ❤ The song sounds simple but the bass line is so hard to play 😮 your audience scares me a bit 😊
Thank you very much! DeathStudios!
Very nice 🎸
Thank you Art!
What are your thoughts on the playability of the Spector?
I think they are very comfortable to play and I've had no issues with any of them... and I'm traditionally not a p/j guy.
sounds cool man.
thanks.
Someone in the Talkbass forum mentioned that the bassline in this 80s classic. I never knew until _today_ that it was so awesome! You nailed it man, great performance!
What a great song. Great guitar solos. People don't put ARS up on the same high pedestals as they do Allman Brothers and Skynyrd, but they were a stellar band - in the studio and live.
you captured the tone nicely. well done!
I'm glad you liked it. Thanks!
I know this video was from 9 yrs ago, but damn, it's TIMELESS!!!! This was one of your best covers, Troy, and that Peavey sounded amazingly just like the bass used on the original song! Well done, sir!!!!
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment.
Great cover Troy!! Top Man!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
Wow man that's amazing, well done
Thanks a lot!
Such a smooth bassline and tone Troy! Excellent playing 🤘
Thanks a lot!
Great rendition Troy.. Played this a few times in a couple of bands… Well done👍👍
Many thanks!
First Class as Always
Thanks again!
Good job. Thank you for this cover. ;-)
Glad you liked it!
My favourite EC song, played brilliantly. Well done Troy. I saw them play this live so many times and my God! If you think the studio version is fast……. Bruce and Pete on fire. Thanks for taking this on.
Very cool, I'm glad you liked it! Bruce has said that some of those live performances may have been "chemically enhanced".
Fantastic, always loved the song but never learned the bass part, guess it's time!
Thanks so much.
This is awesome, what a cool bassline!! Atlanta Rhythm Section is one of my dad's favorite bands, we listen to them a lot in the car on roadtrips.
Thanks! Awesome!
My band covers the Dusty Springfield version, totally different key and more laid back than this version.
Very cool!
Very nicely done!! That Hofner sounds great!!!!
Thanks a lot!
So nice!
Glad you like it!
Oh, I loved ARS back in the day! Thanks for a happy memory, Troy. ❤
Glad you enjoyed it
Great song!🎶🎤👍 & a great job T.🎶🎸👍
Thanks!
I've been playing along to the Dusty Springfield version. Very different from this, and very fun to play.
I didn't know she did this as well. I'll have to check it out.
It's part of the "Lock, Stock and two smoking barrels" soundtrack
That sounded real nice. Perfect tone.
Thank you kindly!
YAY GOOD SONG
I'M GLAD YOU LIKED IT.
Top notch job covering this classic line.Great tone as always with that PJ bass.
Thank you very much!
Nice Job, Troy! Long time fan.
Thank you! Nice to hear from you.
700000 dsparus
I'm not sure what you mean.
👍🤘🇧🇷
Thank you!
I love both versions of this song, the bass line in the Phil version is much more funkier and interesting!! 😄👍
Cool!
@@TJH3113 I learned the bass line by learning the guitar lick first, I believe the song is in A flat major but I could be wrong. 😂👍
👍Yummy lol. I'm loving that laid back groove. Though it's an older song it sounds very up to date. Thanks for the inspiration today. Hey have you seen Ellen Play Bass? I can't believe how good that little girl is!!
Glad you liked it! I was actually surprised to learn that it came out in 1979! I'd have thought it was early-70's. I have seen Ellen, but don't go out of my way to watch her. Of course, she's very good, but she seems to have started off with A LOT of advantages. There's nothing wrong with that and I'm not a hater, but I think she's got enough admirers without me.
Great job, MASTER PLEASE .. FEEL ALRIGHT GRAND FUNK
Thanks so much! I'll check it out, thanks for the suggestion.
OUTSTANDING!!! Excellent technique and that Rick is not only sounding fantastic, it looks fantastic!!! I've always like the Rick's, even though many people hate them.
Thank you!!! I'm glad you like it... I'm not a big fan of the basses.
The Tubes are so underrated it's ridiculous... Favorite american band along with Steely Dan.
Truth!
Yes!!!
Thanks!!!
Great job,how about the ARS song Another man's woman with the bass solo. That would be worthy of your bass skills.Seen ARS back in the day prolly at least 100 times as i hail from the Peach state.....
Thank you. I'll check it out!
@@TJH3113 Your welcome Sir.
Love this one!
Glad to hear it!
Covering hometown heroes Mr Troy
